Discrete Manufacturing (ERP)

The simplified definition of enterprise resource planning (ERP) software is a set of applications that automate finance and human resources departments and help manufacturers handle jobs such as order processing and production scheduling. ERP began as a term used to describe a sophisticated and integrated software system used for manufacturing. In its simplest sense, ERP systems create interactive environments designed to help companies manage and analyze the business processes associated with manufacturing goods, such as inventory control, order taking, accounting, and much more. Although this basic definition still holds true for ERP systems, today its definition is expanding. Today’s leading ERP systems group all traditional company management functions (finance, sales, manufacturing, and human resources). Many systems include, with varying degrees of acceptance and skill, solutions that were formerly considered peripheral such as product data management (PDM), warehouse management, manufacturing execution system (MES), and reporting. During the last few years the functional perimeter of ERP systems began an expansion into its adjacent markets, such as supply chain management (SCM), customer relationship management (CRM), business intelligence/data warehousing, and e-business, the focus of this knowledge base is mainly on the traditional ERP realms of finance, materials planning, and human resources. The foundation of any ERP implementation must be a proper exercise of aligning customers'' IT technology with their business strategies, and subsequent software selection.

The Wizardry of Business Process Management - Part 3

Part 1 of this blog series provided a lengthy discussion about business process management’s (BPM's) necessary parts and parcels, and the software category’s value proposition. At the end of the article, I mentioned my recent attendance of a witty presentation that attempted to explain the essence of BPM via some humor and metaphor of the classic “Wizard of Oz” movie. Namely, on March 23, 2009,

The vendor recently made a decision to replace Salesforce.com Enterprise Edition  with its own CRM system, in an “drink your own champagne” manner. Part 4 of this blog series will provide more of Pegasystems’ value proposition and BPM secret sauce. In the meantime, your comments, thoughts, suggestions or individual experiences with BPM solutions are more than Read More

They do it like that in the Balkans-Select and deploy ERP, I mean (Part II)

The Part I of this blog topic concluded with SAP's supremacy in the upper-end of the regional market. What also helps SAP ERP [evaluate this product] is a number of well-established value added resellers (VARs) that cover the entire former Yugoslavia region, some of which have a few dozen renowned installation sites (customer references) and a roster of experienced consultants. Some of these are

Similar situation is with Oracle i-flex , which too would be a great fit for banks. This lack of presence also might indicate what major effort and commitment to ramp-up partners and own staff in a new region this might require for every vendor, regardless of size. For that reason, the banking sector still uses domestic solutions like Antegra or Pexim , although there are indications Read More

Manufacturing Strategy: An Adaptive Perspective

Adaptive manufacturing enables companies to produce goods efficiently and manage variability proactively. However, it must be managed as an end-to-end, closed-loop process with tight linkages between manufacturing applications, adjacent enterprise applications, and—most importantly—the technology behind these applications. Such integrated networks enable the process visibility and collaboration capabilities that, ultimately, are the key to building an adaptive manufacturing enterprise.
